Re: Talking to the older generation to help prepare?

I don't really have access to older people right now...I'm a little envious of you all who have the opportunity! When the chance for conversation comes up with an older gentleman or lady, it's always nice to hear some of what they've been through. I think this guy put it best: The dialogue you open ...

Repacked and replenished my EDC FAK. Cleaned out EDC. Went on a short hike. Provided ample food for flying, buzzing irritants.

Trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, it's not. Males tend to not care so much if they come across as an asshole when refusing to stop and give directions, a quarter, whatever...females tend to want to be "nice" and help out, sometimes to their detriment.

That's great you were able to convince your buddy of the importance of some food stores. Not a bad start, either.

You have tons of fire stuff but I didn't notice a lighter...oops if I missed it! A Bic will get you hundreds of lights for almost no weight. And you can impress the ladies by opening their beer with it in case of an, uh, SHTF beer situation. :P

Re: The ZPAW starts in 40 minutes, are you ready?

I have many books and printed copies of important stuff, but not quite enough. I was reading a post on PAW dental care, which made me take stock and realize that there's more collecting (and reading) to do! I have almost nothing on gardening. Guess cramped apartment living does that to a person. :ev...

Re: Volunteering with Red Cross, seeing fires, rambling

Thanks for the informative post! I've been extremely curious about the local DAT, and I just got the local number to get hooked up with answers to my many questions. Whether or not I can actually DO it depends on what type of schedule the local chapter expects. Also, I'm interested in the Medical Re...

No. Not only would you 1) Be taking over a location that you have no previous right to, but 2) ...you would, by sealing off a pharmacy, be denying others' access to life-saving drugs. Heart medication, insulin for diabetes, blood pressure meds, painkillers for the very ill...the list goes on. It sou...

Another question. What was the total amount of time you went without power? I'm rereading and it sounds like "no power plus another situation that means even more no power" - or was it just a few hours total?

I don't live by your neck of the woods, but not too long ago we got 12-14 inches dumped on us (depending on which side of town you're on). This is a LOT of snow for this area, as the previous record was 3 inches in one day for December. We got about 9.5 in that 24-hour period. Strangely enough, no o...

Good on your lady for watching out. :D Her confidence and awareness can't be replaced by anything else (as you've stated). I'm a pretty small chick, and when walking at night, sometimes a loud "Hello!" seems to make unsavory looking characters off-balance. I try not to have to walk downtown by mysel...

Re: When not to convince someone to prep?

iMack, when it comes to work everyone knows about my (EDC) bag. I used gauze, an alcohol swab and medical tape to repair one of our desk jockeys after he received a major cut. After that, the bare minimum damage done is that everyone knows I always carry gauze, alcohol swabs, and medical tape. :D Th...

I have a duffel bag with with 12 oz practice (boxing) gloves, 6 oz sparring gloves, punch pads, a partner, and a jump rope. When one guy holds the pads and one guy punches, everyone's puffing and sweaty!

And along with everyone else, calisthenics. :P And Lucretius, I feel your pain.

Lots of movies could have ended after 10-15 minutes. I wished some would have. My ass wouldn't be as numb after say, 2012. Nope Maldon, we don't kid in middle 'Murica here. You'll see a lot of Levi's, Carhartt, North Face, and good boots. There are 4-5 gay bars in the downtown area. For some of thos...

Re: Considering Male Bias in Preparation

Maxrite-as far as guarding goes, why would a male perform this duty better than a female? Unless guards were to be completely disarmed, I see no disadvantage in either gender. Because the high heels, jewelry and glitter would give out the guard's position...(snip) I know more dudes that wear ...
